Event Details


The Regional STEM Centre at Wodonga Senior Secondary College hosted the inaugural Regional STEM Education Conference at the College on November 12, 2015. This event was aimed at current and future teachers of VCE Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Environmental Science, Physics and Psychology as well as Years 7-10 Science, Maths and Digital Technologies. A1. Introduction to Mathematica:
A brief introduction to Wolfram Mathematica and how it can be used as a teaching and learning tool in VCE Mathematical Methods. This hands-on session will run in one of our computer labs.

A2. Extended Practical Investigations in VCE Science:
Maria James from VCAA will provide advice on how to successfully conduct the new mandated extended practical investigation in the VCE Science Study Designs. This session will include opportunities for a Q&A.

B1. VCE General/Further Maths 2016:
Workshop session on implementing the new Study Design in 2016. Q&A session with David Leigh-Lancaster from VCAA (to be confirmed). The Advice for Teachers will be a focus for discussion. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.

B2. Victorian Curriculum 7-10 Science:
Maria James from VCAA will discuss the new Victorian Curriculum for Science that is to replace AusVELS from 2017.

B3. Advanced Mathematica:
An advanced Mathematica session for existing users. Focussed on the Maths Methods CBE Trial Program and planning for 2016. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.

B4. Arduino Esplora in Science:
A brief look at what an Arduino Explora board is (a tiny inexpensive computer that you can program), and how it can be used in teaching Year 10 Science.

B5. VCE Psychology Units 1&2 2016:
Workshop session on implementing the new Study Design in 2016. Will include Q&A session with Maria James from VCAA. The Advice for Teachers will be a focus for discussion. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.

C1. VCE Maths Methods 2016:

C2. Victorian Curriculum 7-10 Maths:
Workshop session on the new Victorian Curriculum for Maths that is to replace AusVELS from 2017. Q&A session with David Leigh-Lancaster from VCAA.

C3. VCE Environmental Science Units 1&2 2016:
Workshop session on implementing the new Study Design in 2016. Will include Q&A session with Maria James from VCAA. The Advice for Teachers will be a focus for discussion. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.

E1. What is STEM? Why does it matter? Where does it fit into the VCE?
Michael Rosenbrock will briefly outline what STEM means, how it relates to secondary education, why it is important and how it fits into VCE Science and Maths.

Workshop session on implementing the new Study Design in 2016. Will include Q&A session with Maria James from VCAA. The Advice for Teachers will be a focus for discussion. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.

F3. What is a Makerspace and how does it fit into a STEM curriculum?
Valerie Radcliffe shares her school’s experience of creating a Makerspace. Find out how Tinkering as pedagogy is different from prac-based tasks in a traditional Science classroom, and learn about how the Maker Movement is changing parent and student expectations worldwide.

F4. VCE Chemistry Units 1&2 2016:
Workshop session on implementing the new Study Design in 2016. Will include Q&A session with Maria James from VCAA. The Advice for Teachers will be a focus for discussion. Possibility for an extended workshop for planning and networking if desired.
